Hi,
In one of our projects in Kandal, we are using drinking water from 20 liter bottles (the blue ones that are used everywhere in the city). I recently realized that many of the people working there still buy and bring the more expensive water from the 500ml plastic bottles that you can get at any corner store. When asked why, they were saying that the water from the big bottles tastes funny. One even said that he had seen "something" swimming inside...
My guess is that someone is making profits refilling these bottles with shit water, re-sealing them with a cheap machine bought on Alibaba (even a heater of some sort might do) and selling them for what seems to be a very competitive price (3000Riel for 20 liter).
I know someone in Europe that offered to test the water for me if I send them some samples. Any idea where I can get small bottles to put the samples in? the same kind of stuff doctors use for urine samples etc?
Cheers!
Fake drinking water
Good idea and worth following up, those big bottles can definitely be fishy...
next time I'm passing, I will post some pics of the local water/ice factory.
but, put up or give up and go home....

You can get testing done here. sample collection can be a bit involved depending on parameters investigated.
Instructions for Taking Water Samples
Water samples are very sensitive because physical and chemical characteristics can change over time if there is no proper collection and storage. Therefore, proper water sample collection techniques are needed to achieve accurate and representative data.

At the risk of sounding a bit cynical, let's suppose someone tests the water and finds it's a scam. What will be done about it? It doesn't sound like you can count on the Cambodian government to be very concerned- especially if it's a foreigner complaining.
I concede I have never been to Cambodia. However, from the reading I have done here and on other sites, I think it's a legitimate question.
