I, too, am curious why the CNRP is more popular in the cities while CPP is all over the countryside. It may be like red state/blue state where the urban areas tend to skew more liberal.
The way the system works here, if you aren't working with the influential people, you are going nowhere. The opposition isn't just popular in the cities, it is popular in the whole central part of the country, the most populous provinces. Kampong Cham has been a hotbed of dissent for years, despite the PM coming from there. It wasn't just coincidental that the province got split after the last election.

Partly I put this down to the urban elites, or even the lower classes, becoming affluent enough that they feel that they don't need to rely on previous power structures. I also think the powers-that-be need to reach out and gain people's confidence again. 8-)

CPP won all but 3 provinces so far. But the 3 going to CNRP are PP, KC and SiemReap

Sure, I don't think it's particularly accurate but I posted it anyway just to show how allegiances might not be quite what some imagine.

89% turnout? Impressive if true, but sounds as if it has been fluffed.
Since yesterday I've spoken to 4 adults who didn't vote, 5 I think, who did vote. Terrible sample size I know...but they are reporting 9 out of every ten people voted.

Was it 89% of the people registered to vote or 89% of people? 3 of the guys I spoke to weren't registered.

89% of registered I believe

roughly 9.8m eligible to vote, 7.8m registered & 6.8m voted

Therefore 87% voted of registered and 69% of eligible. Still high, especially for a local election

Registered voters. 7,040,594 of 7,865,033 registered voters were recorded as casting their ballot.

With 8 million illegal Vietnamese registered to vote here, it's a wonder CNRP got any votes at all.

The people casting their vote here were completely irrelevant....the relevant ones were the ones counting the vote.

Cambodia uses proportional representation so it makes little sense for New Mandala (whoever that is) to award an entire province to a party that won 45% of the vote. Looking at the numbers I'm guessing many provinces split a big chunk of the vote between the two main players.

The government this morning lifted the travel ban on Sam Rainsy. Last month he announced that if the ban was lifted he would be back in Cambodia immediately.

Will he return? I doubt it.

Wily old buggers those CPP folk. They like this cat and mouse game.

Rainey was interviewed on RFA saying he should be allowed home just the night before HE lifted the ban. He was lied right into a trap and now of course he is backpeddling as the CPP knew he would.
