He sounds like a Khmer who's been deported from the states.

One of the best compilations of footage from the 1997 situation is this hour-long Khmer language one:Captain Bonez wrote:Don't know if these have been posted or are of interest to anyone.

This article has no doubt been posted before, however it details how the (approximately) 65 people who died in the Phnom Penh fighting was significantly lower than what could have been had FUNCINPEC seized the city and then been subjected to a siege by CPP forces arriving from the provinces.

Human Rights Watch has also conducted investigations into the whole situation:

I ran into this guy, twice in two days - both around st 240 mid morning. He was looking for some Christian missionary or something, and I ended up calling them to ask where they were the located. The nun said they could no longer deal with him (I think he said his name was Ben). Definitely avoid this guy.Pedrazo wrote:Sounds like scammer Steve. Is this your guy?

This video is great, very positive for a change. I wasn't sure whether to post this here or in the Off the Rails thread because some of it shows the Capitol in a rainstorm. The narrator sounds well cool.

This is brilliant too, amazing to see how much the city has changed in the past 25 years. And it has a good soundtrack.
Early on you can see Olympic Stadium with the area near the water tower caked out with shack-stalls. Around 17.20 it starts showing Chruoy Changva, and the whole place is flat with barely a building to be seen. Independence Monument around 20.00 is a forlorn sight.

Since you were obviously part of untac I am wondering if you can help me on how I might verify the claims of someone who a few years ago started to say he was a peacekeeper in Cambodia and received medals of commendation while there. He would have been in his first year. Out of school in 1993. How can I check this guy out. He is in a role where integrity is a requirement and a number of inconsistencies have arisen that justify a full check
Cheers

^ Depends which countries military he served in. You could try asking him for his discharge papers/record of service/DD-214/Separation documents which should include a full record of the persons military career including deployments and medals/commendations, etc. awarded. feel free to send me a PM and if I can offer further guidance I will.
(I did not serve with UNTAC, far too young)

I'm not a negative person, I encourage people all the time...it's usually to f**k off! But, whatever.

He probably wants to check discreetly, which there are of course loads of ways to do (dependent on which country). PM PSD _Kiwi And he'll advise I'm sure.PSD_Kiwi wrote:^ Depends which countries military he served in. That's the easiest one to do a quick search on. My country, for example, had a sizeable civilian contingent in UNTAC, but no military. There are loads of documents online which explain where the contingents came from, what roles they served and where they were stationed. It's not hard to figure out if someone is bullshitting.PSD_Kiwi wrote:^ Depends which countries military he served in.
Well there's a big warning bell. UNTAC's mandate ended in 1993 and they pulled out in September of that year.Out of school in 1993.

NOT all of UNTAC left in September 1993.
A small element of UNTAC remained to attend to the disposal of and/or transfer of some assets.
And, in fact, one of my former staff from the former UNTAC Office In Singapore that I had had to set up on just a few days notice, a Singaporean lass, then went to Phnom Penh as part of that "Wind - Up Team" or whatever its official name was.
If my memory still serves me, I believe she then was taken in to UN Field Operations Division and went on to serve in the Angola Mission.

I think you've mentioned it before but what happened to the kit? Was the majority repurposed or left in Cambodia?

As posted before:
Wrecked/badly damaged or no longer serviceable vehicles and equipment sold off at auction in country. Normal practice.
Many vehicles and other equipment gifted to the embryonic government departments formed post elections.
Remainder either returned to the large UN immediate response stockpile in Italy or redeployed to other UN Field Ops Division missions at that time of which there were quite a number.

Is this person claiming to have been in an UNTAC Military Contingent or as a UN Staff Member or UNTAC Local Employee?Paradise wrote:Since you were obviously part of untac I am wondering if you can help me on how I might verify the claims of someone who a few years ago started to say he was a peacekeeper in Cambodia and received medals of commendation while there.
