Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.
As an ex-travel writer, the natural attractions of the Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia and Indonesia kill this place. Cambodia probably has the edge when it comes to heritage tourism, but, as other posters have noted, they won't keep coming back to look at Angkor.
I once had students survey tourists in Sihanoukville about what impressed them most about Cambodia. The most popular answer was that locals weren't afraid to look them in the eye-an obvious case of juxtaposing Western values on to Asian culture.

Cambodia will never reach the tourism heights of Thailand, and one of the main reasons is its lack of beaches and Islands compared to its neighbours.
I have met many people who have visited Thailand numerous times, but only a few who have done the same in Cambodia.

Given that for its entire first few decades Pattaya was purely 'fun town', then it would be more accurate to gripe that these days the damn family groups are starting to take over the place.popeyesretreat wrote:Just hope the mongers don't take over like they did in Pattaya, there is nothing wrong with red light districts but taking over a entire city is a bit too much.

Yes. Those lack of beaches in PP and Diem Reap are a pain!Lance_Pedlar wrote:Cambodia will never reach the tourism heights of Thailand, and one of the main reasons is its lack of beaches and Islands compared to its neighbours.

There are lots of empty clean beaches if you can leave the pool lined one.
Thailand has a longer coastline so is bound to have more beaches.
Cambodia will equal Thailand's tourist now in about 20 years. But then Thailand would have exceeded even more by then.

Myanmar on the the other hand will... they have an amazing coastline, 100's of uninhabited islands, temples, a good transportation system in place of; trains, planes, bus, boats all over the county, kind, friendly people etc etc.
Just need build up the tourism industry ( need more hotels, restaurants) IF i was 20 years younger, thats where i would head and set something up
The westerners i know there, (non teachers), are seeing amazing growth in their businesses.
