Angling in/near Phnom Penh
It'll be my first time in Cambodia and i wouldn't mind doing some angling for fish in the Mekong if possible during the day, does anyone know where i can book day fishing for large carp and catfish? ie carp over 80lb+ and catfish 150lb+, this is small for catfish, i know there are massive ones over 500lb in there lol but i'd be happy with a 150lb tbh!
I don't want the tours that last days on end, just day fishing only..
I've googled and found one fishing tour place in Phnom Penh (PPFishing) but i'm not impressed, it looks like a load of amateurs fishing for tiny tiny fish, the size of fish they are landing are a few inches max LMAO, i want specimen fish, not fry lol.
Can anyone help with recommendations?

As you know, some people fish for relaxation and not so fussed if they come home empty handed, while others fish to merely satisfy an ego, lol.LongLost wrote:...I've googled and found one fishing tour place in Phnom Penh (PPFishing) but i'm not impressed, it looks like a load of amateurs fishing for tiny tiny fish, the size of fish they are landing are a few inches max LMAO, i want specimen fish, not fry lol.

Not sure of this is your thing but here in Hanoi I have been having a riot lure fishing for snake heads in the ponds and creeks outside the city . I bought some rods and reels ( via amazon ) including my first ever bait-caster and some topwater frog lures and 2" and 3" tailed shad plastics. I was a mad lure fisherman back home . Had a bass boat etc. Cannot fuckin believe I never did this in Cambodia in the 10 years i was there as snakeheads would be everywhere in Cambodia as well. I will be fishing around Kep when i am there at Xmas. Yesterday I came across a 5 ha tilapia pond farm and was having great fun reeling in plate sized fish until some old viet lady came out and gave me a right bollocking. Could not understand a word she was saying but i knew i was not supposed to be fishing there.
Search youtube for Snakehead / Toman / Topwater / frog / asia Heaps of great videos.

You went on to someone's property and started stealing fish from her pond? What's the matter with you?ricecakes wrote: Yesterday I came across a 5 ha tilapia pond farm and was having great fun reeling in plate sized fish until some old viet lady came out and gave me a right bollocking.

As for the 150-pound catfish: you are a few decades too late.
From Google:
Endemic to the lower half of the Mekong River, this catfish is in danger of extinction due to overfishing, as well as the decrease in water quality due to development and upstream damming. The current IUCN Red List for fishes classes the species as Critically Endangered; the number living in the wild is unknown, but catch data indicate the population has fallen by 80% in the last 14 years.[1][13] It is also listed in Appendix I of CITES, banning international trade involving wild-caught specimens.[14]
In The Anthropologists' Cookbook (1977), Jessica Kuper noted the importance of the pa beuk to the Lao people and remarked, "In times gone by, this huge fish, which is found only in the Mekong, was fairly plentiful, but in the last few years, the number taken annually has dwindled to forty, thirty or twenty, and perhaps in 1976 even fewer. This is sad, as it is a noble fish and a mysterious one, revered by the Lao."[15]
Fishing for the Mekong giant catfish is illegal in the wild in Thailand, Laos and Cambodia, but the bans appear to be ineffective and the fish continue to be caught in all three countries

I actually want to go back there with a translator and see if i cannot swing some fishin time there for some $$$.
I do not think they understand the concept of catch and release in this country but they DO get the concept of M O N E Y.
Fuck if i could fish that lake all day for $20 or so Id be stoked.

Slightly off topic, but anybody know what a good line set up is for casting sea shore fishing? Thinking of just short bodied mackrel, maybe the odd barracuda etc.
I wanna give those long gill nets ago. Not sure if it's bad form for white dudes to be doing it though.

Ballooning can be an effective way to get some distance from casting/drifting, keeping your rig away from rocky bottom and line visibility (attach a glow stick at night). Works best with a good breeze at your back. I haven't fished in decades but had some good results back in the day into salmon off the south west coast of Western Australia...anybody know what a good line set up is for casting sea shore fishing?

Yeah true, but anyone could drop a bit of "string" in the water with an hook and bait on and catch small fish, it's a sport when you have to hunt the larger fish out, try different set ups to get the target fish you want. Here in the UK i can spend days going through different rigs to catch just one large carp, even then it isn't guaranteed, this year has been a bad year, hardly any bites whatsoever, i've been all over the UK and it's the same on each pond / lake.kinard wrote:As you know, some people fish for relaxation and not so fussed if they come home empty handed, while others fish to merely satisfy an ego, lol.LongLost wrote:...I've googled and found one fishing tour place in Phnom Penh (PPFishing) but i'm not impressed, it looks like a load of amateurs fishing for tiny tiny fish, the size of fish they are landing are a few inches max LMAO, i want specimen fish, not fry lol.
Far from relaxation for me, i'm sweating my b*ll*cks off after carting all my gear around haha
