Dream Car for Phnom Penh / Cambodia
If you could own/drive any car here in Phnom Penh, what would it be?
If I lived in Europe or the States I would love a Porsche GT3, but certainly wouldn’t here. I’d probably choose a G Wagon - an SUV that’s not too big, but looks cool and is tough. Maybe a Wrangler, but not perfect for the city. If I lived in the provinces I’d get a Pick Up, but I can’t understand why there are so many in the city.
I also saw a Smart Car the other day - I would drive one in Paris, but no way in hell I would here with their shitty suspension and the size factor.

G-wagon sounds good, otherwise:

Driven a variety here; hands down an older Range Rover; but the 2.7 diesel, not some absurd v8 turbo top of the line model - switched mine for a crappy Audi Q7 that has given me nothing but massive repairs bills whenever it runs over a 1cm hole. I’m sure it would be great for an autobahn, but not PP.
The Range Rover is like the aforementioned tank, yet allows for turning up in a luxury car on a sunny day, whilst similarly handles the shitty roads and anything off road, flooding, etc in its stride. Fuel consumption on the diesel model also great for urban standstill, and getting 2-3 trips to the beach & back before a refill. Older models knocking around $20k-$25k even not so dreamy?

And after lowering the windshield it might be highly recommended to wear (sun)glasses of some kind.

Most of the ones that I have ever seen have been in fairly bad condition, and usually have a Toyota engine jury-rigged into themMiguelito wrote:I've seen a couple around town and would love to buy one one day. Anyone have an idea where you could fine one for sale?Jep wrote:Willys Jeep.

G-wagons would actually be a decent vehicle for PP, only problem is they don't have a very tight turning circle.
As someone mentioned, an Abrams tank would be the perfect vehicle for PP streets.
Personally I can't be bothered owning a car here, the roads are way too congested and it's quicker taking a tuk-tuk or moto, plus I like to drink and am extremely anti drinking and driving.

I'm not a negative person, I encourage people all the time...it's usually to f**k off! But, whatever.

Hands down the old Toyota LandCruisers. I've had my Landmonster for over 6 years and love it. Tough, simple, strong, high off the ground, lots of power, price was right, good parts availability, lots of room, can bull my way though traffic (two, three horn airhorns on the front.) Mine is a 1993 with a carb (no computer), 5-speed manual trans and manual hubs. Simplicity defined. Only down side is mine (big straight 6) does use a lot of petrol. Its not plush, but neither is Cambodia. Like I said, parts are a big factor. You can get a Range Rover, but try and get parts or it worked on all over Cambodia. A Toyota? Every little shop can get parts and work on it. BTW/ Those ugly/wide Humvee 2 and 3 you see here are not real Humvees, the are Chev. pickups under the square body. The real Humvee has the best 4-wheel drive independent suspension ever made, Hummer 2/3 do not.

BTW/ I've owned 4 model A Fords. A '31 todor, '30 fordor, '28 roadster and a rare '28 Roadster pickup made in Canada. Yes, a great car, but the glass is not safety glass and can be death in an accident. I love the way you time the 4 cyl engine, There is a little two inch pin like thing screwed into the front of the engine. You take it out and reverse it, turn the engine over with the provided crank and when the pin clicks into a grove in the engine, number one is at top-dead-center. You could get them in any color you wanted as long as it was black. In 1931 old henry experimented with and made two model A Fords with "X" 8 cylinder engines. Very weird. In 1962 I used to drive my Todor sedan as my main transportation.( while I was building a '55 Pontiac with a '57 Bonniville tri-power V-8) Even used to date in it and it had a nice soft/big back seat.
