Taking a Cambodian woman to Macau
I took my girlfriend to Macau earlier this month.
Bassaka Air, JC Airlines, and Lanmei Airlines supposedly fly there nonstop, but I think Lanmei now flies only via Siem Reap. You can find fares around $100 each way without much difficulty.
It's visa on arrival for Cambodians. The cost of the visa is 100 Macau petacas/Hong Kong dollars. There's an ATM right by the visa on arrival booth in the Macau airport.
What I didn't know is that although it's visa on arrival for Cambodians and other disfavored countries, citizens of these countries must show 5,000 HKD cash or the equivalent in foreign currency (about $600). They are then admitted for ten days if they can show that they have the money.
We were not carrying $600 cash, and I did not want to withdraw hundreds from the ATM there for a short visit since I would be paying the hotel by credit card anyway. Eventually with some arguing by me and showing the hotel booking and return flight in two days they let her in.
There are free hotel shuttle buses to all the hotels/casinos in the airport bus parking lot. The shuttles also run between partner hotels, like between Sands Macau and Sands Cotai Central, between Wynn Macau and Wynn Palace, etc. so with a bit of planning you can easily travel between old Macau and the new hotels on the Cotai strip, and to the airport and ferry terminal, without spending any money.
Many of the hotels have free attractions to see, which Asians love because they are good for selfie taking. The best of these are:
1. Fountain and Eiffel Tower replica at Parisian
2. Canals at Venetian
3. Floral arrangements at Wynn Palace
4. Diamond lobby show every hour at Galaxy Hotel
5. Dragon show in lobby every 30-60 minutes at Wynn Macau
Wynn Palace also has a cool ski lift/skycab thing that lifts you from the sidewalk and takes you on a 5 minute ride around the lake/fountain in front of the hotel and into the hotel. It's free. But then you have to walk back to the street, unless you want to pay like $100 HKD to take the ski lift back down.
I like the Cotai strip where the new hotels are, it's like the Las Vegas strip but more compact, nicer weather, much less crowded. Lots of restaurants and shopping.
I recommend Macau if you want to take a Cambodian woman somewhere other than Thailand and Singapore. You may want to avoid Friday-Saturday if you dislike crowds. Note that many of the museums are closed on Monday, as is the panda habitat.

Very little except at the hotel. Stayed at the not cheap Conrad but I get lounge access there so it included free breakfast and free evening drinks/appetizers which were sizable enough to be dinner. Took a few taxis. Bought a Coke outside St. Paul's ruins for 12 HKD, which I thought was excessive.YaTingPom wrote:Did you spend any money?

A free trip to Macau, staying at a nice place (with lounge access), and being shown around to places that she will enjoy while doing what she enjoys doing. GM actually comes across as a pretty nice guy. Too bad we all know what a prick he is.YaTingPom wrote:Wow. Your mrs is a very lucky woman.gavinmac wrote:Very little except at the hotel. Such as various jobs GM requires to be done around the bed and in other creative places around the hotel room.Miguelito wrote:she will enjoy to do what she enjoys doing
It sounds very romantic, would it be worth it for a Nigerian woman like myself to go? Without GM, of course, unless he buys me an excessive coke.

And thanks to GavinMac, because that is a good write up. I'm surprised he didn't mention the airline mistake on the return leg though.

I spared you, I bitched about that already.Miguelito wrote:

I emailed them and complained about it and they offered me a $20 coupon. I guess that's better than nothing.

I think some would like it but some would find the replica St. Mark's Square and replica Eiffel Tower and some of the other attractions to be tacky.violet wrote:Would you recommend it as a place for a white woman to take herself for a short break?
If you decide you don't want to go you can just watch these videos.

Have you ever taken her to ''The New Macau'' in Cambodia ? No doubt very similar to Macau except that maybe the Old Macau is more westernized/less Chinesey.gavinmac wrote:I took my girlfriend to Macau earlier this month.

The New Macau has a dolphin fountain right near the beach, and canals and shit.
Loads of flowers in SHV market.
Dunno about diamonds though, and not many dragons.

A bus/taxi from old town to the Cotai strip where the new casinos are takes 20 minutes. You can walk around the whole old town, like from the ruins of St. Paul's church to the museum to the other churches and to Wynn Macau, in a couple of hours. From there you can get the free hotel shuttle to Wynn Palace, located on the Cotai Strip. Then you can walk around and see the major hotels on the Cotai Strip for a half day.ali baba wrote:How spread out is it? Can you walk around the old town and see most of the sites then catch a bus to casinos and repeat or are you on and off buses all day?
2 nights and 1-1.5 days there is enough. It's best combined with a trip to Hong Kong, which is an hour away by fast ferry. But Cambodians need a visa in advance to visit Hong Kong. Actually, one of the reasons why I took her to Macau is in the hope that it will improve her chances to get a future visa to visit Hong Kong.
