Fifth boy out already!
Update: And a sixth.
Presumably, two others won't be far behind.

Definitely a cluster fuck, especially early on. Very poor handling by the Thai authorities who were both overwhelmed and mesmerized by the media attention they received. With the 24/7 press video coverage you don't have to be onsite to see that nor a cave rescue expert understand that it should have been handled much better much earlier. Thank goodness for the foreign expertise in logistics that saved the day.McPhisto wrote:CNN is showing a lot of video inside the cave taken over the past week. You can see literally hundreds of people inside there. Most look like teenagers just standing around holding some cable or rope. One person every 4 feet seemingly for kilometers inside the cave. They whole thing looked like a circus. Plus the insistence that Thais lead the rescue to preserve national dignity. Too much media, too much grandstanding, not enough direct action, from what I can see. They should have kept everyone else away but the professional, international rescue divers and their direct support staff straight away.

The Thai authorities do appear to have tried to assume control to avoid political loss of face. The sad loss of life of the Thai Navy Seal diver shows that the Thais themselves were ill-prepared to undertake such a task.
This is an incident which is, after all, a failure on the part of the authorities for even allowing the expedition to venture so deep within the cave system at the onset of the monsoon season.
I am not pretending to be an expert, but serious questions do need to be asked of the Thai authorities.

How does the sad loss of life indicate anything? Are you making assumptions?springrain wrote:These two do have a point though, Hanno.Hanno wrote:Another expert.... No. If you read what I said, it shows that the diver concerned was ill-prepared. How is that an assumption?

Seems to me that the Thais do let foreigners take the lead.
That somebody died during the rescue mission is sad but probably not unusual. As stated elsewhere, my dad was a professional diver when he was younger. Not cave diver, open water, and even then colleagues of his died.
Maybe the posters are right; maybe they are just the Thai Visa type that just need to take any opportunity to bash Thailand without actually having a clue?

Was he ill-prepared or a sad accident whilst doing a dangerous job?springrain wrote:No. If you read what I said, it shows that the diver concerned was ill-prepared. How is that an assumption?

I saw an incredible video on Facebook yesterday of what the rescuers have to go through to get to them. Unfortunately I can't find the same video now, just a bunch of rescuers walking through neck high water. But the video I saw showed some areas they have to climb up and down, crevices they have to squeeze through, areas where they literally have to hold their breath going through mud under a rock and then emerging, and not being able to use a regulator for that. I'm a diver myself, and seeing some of what they're dealing with does not make me want to become a cave diver.

First off, it was a pool at the country club and they were pool toys, secondly, don't forget the winter trips to Antigua diving for conch shells.gavinmac wrote:Miguelito wrote: I'm a diver myself

I knew a dive instructor (English) who lived in Prague and did open water dive instruction in the river, with often zero visibility. If you can dive in that, you can dive anywhere. ...ibviously I'm speaking loosely, idiots still need to learn about depth, currents and so on.
