Tap water, strange smell, weird taste
In Tuol Kork & in Daun Penh
The tap water has a very weird smell - like mold and it tastes weird even after being boiled (sorry! thanks)
The smell is persistent on hands after washing with soap
Does anyone know what's wrong?

I heard some people at work today saying the water from the cooler didn't taste right, one of the local staff said it often happens after a holiday because the water has been sitting in the pipes/ roof tanks for a few days without normal circulation.
Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.
Boilt? Made up word alert!
I tried the water in PP and it tasted of chemicals. In Kampot I buy ProVida which is bottled up near the dam or I drive up to the highest point and fill up 1l bottles. Takes all day.

There was a thread on one of the expat FB threads last week about funny tasting water. Everyone was chipping in with quality tests from different parts of the city.
The consensus was that something wasn’t quite normal.

It has tasted/smelled "earthy" around Pochentong for nearly 2 weeks. Used to be OK for making tea, tastes pretty foul now, even after boiling. We don't have a roof tank, water comes straight off the main so it's not because it's been standing around. It happened at least once before in the last 4 years. Can't remember how long it lasted but it didn't cause any ill effects. Hopefully it'll go back to normal soon...

Yes, the water has been 'earthy' for a while now. It stinks like mud/dirt. Me and the missus were taking about this today after she made the 'stink face' whilst boiling water in the kettle for tea. I joked that maybe the guys at the water plant decided to take the Water festival off like everybody else... Maybe?

It's the same at our place, the taste is chlorine. My dad who used to work in water treatment plants reckons it's standard practice to up the chlorine level once in a while to clean out the system or in response to a contamination. He's still drinking it, so guess it's not that bad.

I worked in more than one water treatment plant. I can tell you how it works. They send raw sewage through to what they call the racetrack. It has strips or wands which take out the clumps of shit and toilet paper and any other debris that is big. Then it goes through at least two clarifyers, which let the sediment float to the bottom over time, then being passed to a new clarifyer to let it subside again. Then it goes through a waterfall process which is injected with liquid chlorine and as it passes through the waterfall it is let back out into a river or tributary to recycle. If they fuck up bad, they inject more chlorine to kill the bacteria, which also kills the marine life.
I don't know what happened, but it killed one of my fish, and I use conditioner in the fish tank.
I use Hi-Tech water to drink.
Almost forgot, they take all that raw sewage and lay it out on these huge long beds of about 100 feet by 10 feet, and let it dry in the sun. Then they just use a bulldozer to shovel it into farmers trucks. That's right, they sell it to the farmers for their fields to grow your food.

I love bitches n gonna fuck Texas and the USA+ right up their god damn ass! Hallelujah!
The demand for water in the city exceeded the capacity of the treatment plant a while ago. Water then passes through the plant without enough sedimentation time, filters don't work properly, and additional chlorine is used to kill bacteria that clings to the extra particles that get through into the distribution system (pipes). The extra particles give the water the funky taste.
I've noticed an earthy taste to tapwater since about 2009. The PPWA clain all kinds of awards for their system but the fact is they havent been able to keep up with the citys fast growth.

They are not 'claims', they are genuine awards. You can check at their office near the railway station. PP has better water quality than several American cities. Flint, Michigan comes to mind, but several others. It is possible that recent growth is outstripping capacity of the present treatment plant, but perhaps only in outlying areas.nabanga wrote:The PPWA clain all kinds of awards for their system but the fact is they havent been able to keep up with the citys fast growth.

to be fair, back in NI, I remember happening to peek inside our water tank a few times. there were long dead pidgeons in there and i've always drank tap water, never got sick
The flavouring has hit us in bkk3 today. Have any of you that had this earlier still got it, or it is passing through the system?
