Really? I never noticed that. Probably for stats, but it's kind of freaky if true. Probably done in the US as well, just not overtly.
I noticed at Lucky they just started charging VAT. Another reason to go elsewhere.

Do you mean the bar code taped to the counter next to the cash register that is the bar code for your plastic bag purchase ...gavinmac wrote:Why at Super Duper and Panda Mart do the cashiers scan a little bar code for "foreigner" or "Khmer" identifying the customer for every purchase? I mean, in the USA, they don't record "black" " white" "Hispanic" etc. when you buy something.
Also, thank fuck that this is not the USA.

No, both at Panda Mart and Super Duper they have two bar codes taped to the counter right in front of the register and one is labeled "Khmer" and one is labeled "foreigner" and when I check out they scan "foreigner." They do this after ringing up all the items and the price is displayed, so it's not like foreigners pay more.Playboy wrote:Do you mean the bar code taped to the counter next to the cash register that is the bar code for your plastic bag purchase ...gavinmac wrote:Why at Super Duper and Panda Mart do the cashiers scan a little bar code for "foreigner" or "Khmer" identifying the customer for every purchase? If you pay in US $ they scan the foreigner barcode and if you pay in Reil the scan the Khmer barcode.

No, that's not it. The bar codes are labeled "Khmer" and "foreigner" they are not labeled "riel" and "dollar." I think they scan them before you even pay them too. But I'll go there and pay for something in rile and report back.kiwiincambodia wrote: I think it’s to do with the currency.

Ask them? They don't know why, they are just doing what their boss told them to do.violet wrote:You asked them, didn't you? What did they answer?

It could just be for sales research.

I’m sure it is. I’ve paid in riel before and they scanned the Khmer code.gavinmac wrote:No, that's not it. The bar codes are labeled "Khmer" and "foreigner" they are not labeled "riel" and "dollar." Do they print receipts in English and/or Khmer?
My guess the code would be for the receipt language. But I’ve got a minion to do shopping for me and rarely enter such places.
