I kind of liked Paddy Rice as it was one of the few places on the Riverside where you could sit just inside the restaurant but yet feel like you're kinda sitting outside because it was so open air. I got tired years of dealing with beggars while sitting outside anywhere Riverside. But the French press style coffee they served with the decent breakfast was total shit. Along with the waitress service usually being bad.

Have all the happy pizza places been priced out of the riverside yet?Miguelito wrote: I heard it was just that the lease was up and the price was increasing too much to renew.

I am guessing that they are actually owned, not leased.el Dangeroso wrote:Have all the happy pizza places been priced out of the riverside yet?Miguelito wrote: I heard it was just that the lease was up and the price was increasing too much to renew.

I was thinking just the other day that the Riverside really hasn't improved much over the years. The only place I occasionally go to is K West, and there are one or two other exceptions such as Metro. But on the whole it's a mess, and a less charming mess than it used to be. There's even a good old fashioned 10,000 reil massage joint, complete with satin curtains and grimy foam mattresses, recently opened a stone's throw from Paddy Rice. Throw in to the mix the coffin shops, rice and salt wholesalers, construction sites and the empty lots and it really is pretty crap.el Dangeroso wrote:Have all the happy pizza places been priced out of the riverside yet?Miguelito wrote: I heard it was just that the lease was up and the price was increasing too much to renew.

Yea, it's not the best option of bars and restaurants that it could be, but it certainly has its draws:slavedog wrote:I was thinking just the other day that the Riverside really hasn't improved much over the years. Yi Sang: Although south of "the riverside" and Royal Palace, I enjoy a long lazy dim sum lunch looking over the river here. A great place to bring visiting friends. Try their signature "almond ball" which is a shrimp dumpling center with a fried almond exterior.
Pop café: A tiny little Italian restaurant really hidden away, but worthy of a stop (even says my Italian friends).
FCC: The infamous FCC featured in all of the tour guides... the service has gone to shit. Lucky that they're about to close for a total rehaul -- hopefully they'll reopen re-energized.
Tuk: Just across the corner from the FCC is a series of bars stacked upon one another. An afternoon drinking beer at Tuk looking out over the river and street below is quite pleasurable.
Chez Tonton: A relatively new addition, this little French bistro is worthy of popping into now and again for a bottle of wine and perhaps dinner.
5 Drunk Men: I'll admit that I still haven't been there, as they've annoyed me a few times -- but others seem to enjoy it and the view.
Le Moon / K-West: A very pleasant rooftop with a good view, the cocktails are reminiscent of an Applebee's in the '80's. But, another spot worthy of a drink to show visitors the view below, especially nice with Wat next door. Happy hour in the hotel lobby on the ground floor is two for one, good for a business meeting but not the best ambiance to just stop in for a drink.
Metro, as mentioned
La Croisette: Decent for lunch or happy hour (I like the aperol spritz).
Juniper: A few dozen meters down St 130 is Juniper Bar, with one of the best views of all bars in the city. Excellent place for the sunset, although it is small and can get crowded (don't forget there's a second bar area/"viewing platform"). Also right there on St 130 is Sher-e-punjab or Noodle House for dinner.
Oskar: I think it's a great all around place, and wish more places in the city had that ambiance and mix of drinks/food that Oskar does.
Viva: Certainly not the fanciest of places, nor with the best food, but it's hard to beat their $1.50 margaritas made with fresh squeezed lime juice.
Hummus House: Moved a few doors down from before, the place looks nicely polished from before. This is a go-to delivery spot for me actually. Try the fish wrap (seriously).
Tuk was always heavy in my rotation for the great views and seemingly perfect level of customers inside to not be overly crowded or too quiet. If you’re on the riverside why not go to a place off ground level to avoid the beggars? Just so happens I met my wife here as well.
Viva incredible margaritas, dangerously good.
As for paddy rice, burn it.

The whole point of going to FCC years ago was looking out on the river, but now they have allowed some ugly vegetation to grow underneath and up to the balcony that blocks the view.

I refuse to patronise this establishment since they have a policy of not serving Khmers. My wife and her female friend were refused service there because they are Khmer.Miguelito wrote:Pop café: A tiny little Italian restaurant really hidden away, but worthy of a stop (even says my Italian friends).

Strange! Never heard that before, but I obviously know your wife and have no reason to doubt her so fuck them then.slavedog wrote:I refuse to patronise this establishment since they have a policy of not serving Khmers. Yea, and when you have cheaper beer across the street with a similar view at Tuk (or upstairs of Tuk), you have to do something more to differentiate yourselves. Instead they grew that vegetation and let service completely lapse.gavinmac wrote:Miguelito wrote:

I heard an accusation a few days ago about a guy being refused service at a hostess bar because he's white; it turned out to be untrue, there was another reason. Did the Pop Cafe staff say "We can't serve you because you're Khmer?"

This was about 12 years ago, so too far back to recall the precise words spoken (I'm not even sure if my wife remembers the incident at all - I will try to remember to ask her). But I remember it clearly enough. We had been to Pop Cafe as part of a small group two or three times and enjoyed it - there wasn't a lot of Italian food available back then - Volpia is the other one we would go to at that time. Anyway, it was Water Festival, and my wife and her friend were out for a bit of a dtau leng and decided to go there for dinner but were told no khmers. We haven't been back.gavinmac wrote:slavedog wrote:I refuse to patronise this establishment since they have a policy of not serving Khmers. Funny, I think I may have had a similar experience with that place - I’d forgotten about it. It was a couple of years back.
I was with my Khmer niece and nephew and I needed to go to an ATM. So I sent them in first while I went to ATM.
Told them to order drinks and I would be along shortly.
When I arrived they were sitting at a seat right at the door and hadn’t ordered. When I asked them why they were weird and said they didn’t like this place, said something like it wasn’t good for Khmer, and asked if they could go somewhere else. I thought they were just being weird at the time and TBH was a pissed off as I wanted to eat there.
So we went elsewhere, I didn’t pursue it but after reading Slavedogs post I’d bet someone said something to them. They probably wouldn’t have told me at the time as they would have been worried about me causing a scene.
