Sandals/thongs from old tyres
Sandals/thongs from old tyres
Saw an article in the PP post or KT and it was posted on here or TOF (can’t remember) about some old chap (90yo) who makes sandals from old car tyres.
Anyhoo it says they originated from the Pol Pot era where things were scarce and people did what they could with the available resources.
The article says he sells a lot to young people (who like the traditional flip flop style) and the sandal type to older generation who just like them, maybe to remember harsher times.
Well i got hold of the old geezer and now own a pair. $5, 20,000 mile warranty!
As I suspected they’re not made from the tread, because that contains metal so is probably harder to work with and a hazard to your feet, but the sidewall.
Can’t find the original article.
I find this article from 2000. Maybe they are still sold at the market. Anyone know?

At the bus station to collect them and the young locals were curious. One old boy seemed to get a bit nostalgic about them.
They are comfortable but the old boy said they’d take a few months to “shape to your feet”, or that’s the translation my wife gave me.

Exactly as worn by countless Viet Minh and Viet Cong during the fist and second Indochina Wars.
Anyone who served in SVN during the American War aka the Vietnam War aka the Second Indochina War will be very familiar with these Ho Chi Minh sandals.

I read somewhere they’d have the print backwards so the US forces thought they were actually following where they were going but it was where they’d come from!Ot Mean Loi wrote: ↑Sun May 26, 2019 2:08 pmExactly as worn by countless Viet Minh and Viet Cong during the fist and second Indochina Wars.

Not sure if it’s true or not.
They were certainly popular in Cambodia.

The father in law made thousands in the Pol Pot era. He demonstrated how he made them one time using a Cornflakes box, as we didn't have any truck tires laying about.
Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.

good find YTP
have seen them around in the past but was wary of what might diffuse from the adulterated rubber into the skin of the feet
would be dousing them in talcum powder which may partially stop the diffusion, and also help with the new shoes scuffing wear and tear upon the feet

in the process of fucking off to the land of honey and free beer
Oh yes can’t to be too careful. I’d wear socks too just to be extra safe.

YTP - If you believe this then you would believe anything...

Any half baked infantryman knows which is the front of the foot and the back of the foot from the impression it leaves in the ground due to the weight of the human body when walking. Think about it for five seconds. Duh!

Who but the British wear socks with Thongs/Sandals?
Certainly no one in SE Asia or along the Ho Chi Minh Trail or elsewhere in this region.

Yeah. The US did a great job of out foxing those VC.
OML. Instead of patronising and being a smart arse why don’t you give some constructive comments?
You really are a tosser sometimes.
And ffs learn to quote. Please.

I see locals wearing those “glove” socks all the time in Cambodia even though Mr Know-it-all thinks it’s just the British who wear socks with sandals, not that there’s anything wrong with that of course.
Very in vogue nowadays down Ballsack Lane I hear.
I guess now whenever I read something on the internet I shouldn’t believe it (including this thread) even though I’ve seen multiple websites with the same info on.

YTP - It's posters like you that are killing this forum.
Please engage brain before hitting the keyboard.
You have a total lack of historical or military perspective for this region and some of your simplistic postings killed the UNTAC series I initiated.
Back to sucking eggs and no love lost between us, mate. Please learn to control your online verbal diarrhea

Then don’t post on my threads you tit.
And by the way you’re the one who started with the dick comments. The socks thing was a joke which as usual goes over your head.
The tread thing was a throwaway comment that you took it upon yourself to show how superior and smug you are.
Good for mate. Well done. >slow clap<
(Unless you’re flirting with me. I’ve told you I’m not interested)
