Drinking for work
How much do those that work in a professional setting have to drink for work? Is there any escape?

Back when I was working full-time I would probably be out drinking for work, networking, entertaining clients, JV Partners, et cetera, three or four times per week minimum.
When I ran the brewery here, that would have been a minimum of five nights per week visiting customers.
100-200 units of alcohol per week, along with $3,000 to $5,000 per month in booze related expenditure (receipted).
So a fraction of my London/New York based business booze expenditure

I work in hotels where alcohol is omnipresent. Add to that a culture of drinking rice alcohol with the authorities here in North Vietnam and some rules are in order to avoid liver cirrhosis:
- I very rarely drink with guests.
- With the authorities my spiel is pointing out that I am German and only drink beer. Still alcohol but I avoid the H'Mong moonshine. And no, drinking soft drinks or water is not (yet) an option when it comes to the government bigwigs.
- I do actually only drink beer, with maybe a glass of Champagne on New Year's Eve.

I think in Asia/SE Asia there is way more pressure than in the EU and US to drink alcoholFuzzhead22 wrote: โThu Jun 06, 2019 11:33 amcan always drink coke or water, no need for booze...!

Iโd say 2-3 times a week for work. Sometimes I joke that my job is really to just be able to drink and hold my own. I donโt go to KTVs, but have dinners a few times a week with various customers, suppliers, business partners, colleagues, etc. Then toss in various events that take place, and just being social/networking (which Iโm not counting as for work).
Everything here is always bottomless - Tuesday I had an industry event (bottomless), last night a launch party (bottomless), and tonight a charity dinner (bottomless). And the Cambodians always want to cheers and cheers and down drinks.

Because alcohol will show the true person behind the facade. Can one keep a dignified presence after 10+ units, one can be trusted in all other situations of severe pressure as well, not?

the opposite happened to me, I used to work as a Cellarman for Saxonvale wines, I always joked I only got the job as I have always hated the taste of wines,
I never felt compelled to drink with business partners, aside from MoU signing ceremony champagne & that sort of nonsense; even then would have just a mouthful before the event would move on & you could ditch it. I rarely attended any of the chambers of commerce lunches or their evening events, even then just a beer, meet who I want quickly and then get out.
The only time I really drank heavily would be monthly staff 'town hall' gatherings, where a few cans of the local stuff would be necked with my team - staff were always happy to be able to "Jol muoy" their boss & share a beer. Likewise, I never expected any of my staff to drink if they didn't want to; numerous Khmer managers in my team didn't drink at all, and that was never a problem, they just had a coke/soda/water instead.
I'd rather do business with somebody who was able to maintain control of what they want, rather than drinking purely to "fit in". It never caused me any trouble to say no, but likewise could easily say yes if I was parched and a few beers would help.

Not sure drinking 10 units and still being compus mentis is a recommendation, more likely a sign of alcoholism.I suppose it depend son the size of the unit and % alcoholnewnewnewbie wrote: โThu Jun 06, 2019 1:50 pmBecause alcohol will show the true person behind the facade. 10 Anchor beers about equivalent to 2 Leffe bruins
