I thought barangs are NOT allowed to buy used bikes in Cambodia
We're not.over the rainbow wrote: ↑Thu Jun 27, 2019 12:31 pmI thought barangs are NOT allowed to buy used bikes in Cambodia
My understanding is can buy and it's not illegal to use the card of the last owner but probably impossible to put in your name.A10 wrote: ↑Thu Jun 27, 2019 3:58 pmWe're not.over the rainbow wrote: ↑Thu Jun 27, 2019 12:31 pmI thought barangs are NOT allowed to buy used bikes in Cambodia
What that means for insurance etc. I don't know but pain in the neck if you want to cross borders with it.

I think insurance goes with the vehicle not the person.
Whether your health insurance company would try and wriggle out because the bike wasn't in your name......well they use any excuse.
I hear the registration thing is pissing the department off so much they will rescind but don't know when.
@RobW I'm not sure if it's legal or illegal (how can you prove you're not borrowing a friend's scooter?) to ride with just the card. Most people I know who have a used bike just keep the card and have had no issues, but I've heard of one person getting their bike confiscated and couldn't get it out because the owner on the card couldn't be contacted.
I don't know the reason, but I bought a newly imported (first owner in Cambodia) but used Honda Today that I was able to register no problem, so you don't have to buy new necessarily.

I was probably one of the last Barangs that got a second hand bike registered. Its all legally in my name with license plate and registration card.

Since when? Most people I know have at least one second-hand bike they bought here.over the rainbow wrote: ↑Thu Jun 27, 2019 12:31 pmI thought barangs are NOT allowed to buy used bikes in Cambodia
Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.
Mr. Ding,..can you confirm when the law was changed? when did you buy?dingens2019 wrote: ↑Fri Jun 28, 2019 3:35 pmI was probably one of the last Barangs that got a second hand bike registered. Its all legally in my name with license plate and registration card.
Put the bike registration in wife's or relative's name in-case of confiscation, which is rare.

True, although with a power of attorney signed by the owner it's usually OK. However, whether or not you can take it to a neighboring country isn't important, few people do that or buy a bike for that specific purpose. They want a ride to get them to work and back, not to go on endless holidays. Also, Vietnam is tricky with a Cambodian bike. Border areas seem OK but not beyond that. Thailand and Laos (arriving directly from Cambodia) are fine though.RobW wrote: ↑Thu Jun 27, 2019 4:11 pmMy understanding is can buy and it's not illegal to use the card of the last owner but probably impossible to put in your name.A10 wrote: ↑Thu Jun 27, 2019 3:58 pmWe're not.over the rainbow wrote: ↑Thu Jun 27, 2019 12:31 pmI thought barangs are NOT allowed to buy used bikes in Cambodia

What's with all these silly laws in Cambodia? Foreigners can't buy used bikes? Why the hell not? Who comes up with this nonsense? What about used cars? Then you also have the discriminatory law that says foreigners over 50 can't marry Cambodians.dingens2019 wrote: ↑Fri Jun 28, 2019 3:35 pmI was probably one of the last Barangs that got a second hand bike registered. Despite all it's faults Thailand sounds a lot more sensible. No ridiculous laws like this. Foreigners on tourist visas can own cars and bikes in their name, no restrictions whatsoever (just need an address verification from your embassy or immigration). Ditto for marriage to locals. You can be 98 and the girl 19, no problem.
All Cambodia cares about is selling the country to the Chinese and coming up with more stupid laws.
