Fine scratches on glasses lenses
Fine scratches on glasses lenses
Does anyone know of an optometrist that can polish fine scratches off from my specs lenses like scratches can be polished from car paint with a woolen buff. They are fine scratches from my sunglasses touching the lenses leaving two blind spots when looking straight ahead. They are really soft lenses, there are no scratches on the sun glasses where they contact the specs. I have taken them back to where I bought them but they said they cannot polish scratches from lenses. ( there in the business of selling new lenses, aren't they)
You wear sunglasses over glasses! They must be huge!
Sounds the anti scratch/anti glare is worn off.
Generally you can’t buff out scratches on prescription glasses for that reason.

YTP is correct, I had thin scratches on the glass due to cleaning them with the wrong material. After a couple months trying I got fed up and got new ones
Yes. Pay good money ($400+) for good lenses (Zeiss, Hoya etc).
I’ve got 10 years old sunglasses with Hoya. Still good.

I had a pair of Armanis for 10 years, the glass was still fine and the frames were still solid (the black color was showing a little wear/ metal though) when I lost them. While paying for designer brands can be a bit unnecessary, it's worth getting good UV protection and polarizing lenses etc as the sun can destroy your eyes and give you cataracts and other problems such as blindness.

Are you taking about overpriced sunglasses frames LL and clear lenses (which I doubt were glass) which are totally different to finely honed prescription lenses?
Also I’m pretty sure cataracts is a form of blindness.

I have never needed prescriptions so I'm just talking about sunglasses.

Try a small amount of non abrasive toothpaste on a cotton pad and rub gently so as not to fuck up any lens coating. It also works a treat on poly headlight covers that have gone yellow or clouded from the sun.
It’s worth a try if your glasses are that bad.

Do not do this!

You tried it on headlight plastic so therefore it’ll work on prescription lenses?
You don’t wear glasses do you...
And FYI that fix for your headlight will be back to it’s faded self within a year. You need it professionally polished.

The toothpaste trick works great for cleaning several months worth of built up soap scum off my stainless steel shaving bowl.
Would never use it for spectacle lenses though, it would damage the specialised coatings and might result in opaque lenses.

Well, it’s been 2 yrs now and headlight lenses are still good! You can buy the same stuff the pros use at $35 a tube which probably equates to over 100yrs of yearly cleaning with toothpaste, but hey, you’re the oracle here, what would I know!
You’re right, I don’t wear face furniture and did clean up sunglasses but should you bother to google “scratches on prescription lenses” you’ll see that you’re talking shit yet again!
You have a history of shit dribbling, as shown on Marvins thread the other day, so it’s no surprise that good, solid posters like him don’t bother anymore...

Google is the Oracle, especially Wikipedia.
Back in the real world; I’ve been wearing glasses for 45 years (before Google). I know a little bit about how to clean and not clean them.
