On Being Back
On Being Back
I visited recently, over the last few weeks. I did NOT think too much of it. I lived in PP from 2001 to 2010 and like it or not those were the Golden Years. I think some long-time posters on here can attest to that. I think the city is horrible to the point that had I arrived there for the first time now in its current state I don’t think I would have stayed more than a day or two. The city was electric back then and it was beautiful. I stayed at the Lake when I first arrived and the Lake isn’t even there anymore, not that I ever went there after 03 or so but still. We hung out at Sharky’s and Walkabout and California 2 and the old Martini behind the InterCon, and ate at Kandal House and Pink Elephant and Rendezvous. I asked my wife if she thought it felt LESS developed then when we lived there and she said yes. Except for the revamped airport and some new malls and some tall buildings it’s a complete hole. We were lucky to stay at the new Marriott on St 63 for a few nights at the end of the trip or we would have been unable to bear it. Great hotel by the way. Sorry for those that now call it home. I am sure my opinion matters little. I just thought an impression from someone that once lived there and absolutely adored the place from top to bottom and had a family there and is now spun the other way would be of some interest. I feel sorry for close friends that died there – including KIR who was a close friend of mine – for the indignity of dying in such a pit. I had other very close friends that died there – some of you know English Chris from back in the day and others know Oakland John from even further back (in the factional fighting days). Both deaths were reported on this site for those that wish to search. Both would be gutted to have died in that spot as it currently sits. I think a good metaphor for it is to know that some of the big boys that used to have their way at the riverside have all died. I mean Bronwyn and Hurley and Snow and others. Twelve years ago they were having the times of their lives and were setting their own rules. If someone told them then that they would all be dead before 2020 I think they’d have cashed in and cooked out of town. So glad not to have died there. I hope the same for all of you. Best of luck chaps.

Wasn't the lake abit of a shithole though?
The water looked like a cesspit from what i remember.
I went there once (when completely sober) and never got the urge to sit down anywhere. People pestering you to buy drugs etc.

Wow, you hit it here just at the right time,.. before it all turned into a concrete metropolis with Starbucks on every corner... envious.

How many of those years were spent boozing, whoring and doing drugs? I’m guessing that when you came back with your gf you’ve been stuck doing mundane shit like visiting the mall. Sorry all your friends died.

I sometimes wonder whether if I were to arrive for the first time today rather than nearly twenty years ago I would stay more than a few days. I think the honest answer is that I would not. The place is a shit hole these days.
That said, I have a very good life. Immeasurably better than living back home. I don't work too hard and I travel about once a month, so I get plenty of breaks which helps. And I have a wonderful family and some good mates. I certainly have no regrets.

Great to know where to go, when current circumstances makes it unable to bare. I also am terribly depressed about how this place is developing, and having to deal with the Chinese invasion. I'd rather die at a nursing home in Florida if ever able to make a choice about it. And the Riverside is turning into a sort family style entertainment, and expats are getting fickle, demanding imported frozen cod for their fish&chips and Angus beef for their burgers. It's going downhill here, and fast. But the harem keeps me here for good, unfortunately, and I've moved west/southward to get the real deal surrounding me, instead what is surely to become a sort of Disney style entertainment for the masses.

Yes yes, it's only Expat 2.0s that would complain about fish n chips....newnewnewbie wrote: ↑Tue Jul 16, 2019 10:37 amGreat to know where to go, when current circumstances makes it unable to bare. What's the deal with fish and chips? A Rant - a thread from 2011 that looks to have had a few comments deleted. And there are a half of dozen other such threads, on fish n chips.
And it's definitely a totally 2019 thing to complain about power cuts. No expats in the "golden years" of, say, 2006 would start a thread titled "Fíng Power Cuts!!!!", and Playbot certainly didn't say "EdC are cunts" and Gavinmac didn't inquire about a guesthouse with round the clock electricity and what areas of town to avoid.

Just go to the countryside and eat vegetables and rice and speak to people in your own habitat.newnewnewbie wrote: ↑Tue Jul 16, 2019 10:37 amGreat to know where to go, when current circumstances makes it unable to bare. I'd agree, but we were different people then, more than likely "young free and single" As someone that has lived here for 16 years now I am curious to where you moved to and what has satisfied your yearning for the "Golden Years"? Unless I can find a suitable alternative then I'm probably fucked.
