I got a message from back home today. My cousin, um, "Sally" tells me that her brother "Steve" is moving to the Philippines for a year to teach English at a school. She said a few family members wanted to give him money and asked if a Visa gift card or cash would be better.
Steve is 50 years old, he's never taught anything as far as I know, and he has no college degree. He used to be a mortgage broker, he was a grocer, and lately he manages bars in his hometown in the USA. He's also mentally ill and prone to lying.
Is there any way he has lined up a teaching job in the Philippines from the USA? I don't know how this stuff works, but I don't recall hearing of too many Westerners teaching English in the Philippines. Surely there are experienced, skilled Filipinos who will teach English there for very low pay. Why would any school there hire an American with no experience or credentials to do this?
So now I have to decide "Is Steve full of shit?" and "Is it my place to tell my other cousins, without any facts, that I believe Steve is probably full of shit?"
Adding a bit of color to this is my own brother, who says he thinks Steve met a chick on an Asian dating website a year ago and disappeared from town for a week to visit her. Maybe she has set him up with a job? I guess it's possible, but it all seems unlikely.
Is my cousin really moving to the Philippines to teach English for a year?

Does he have a nice hat?
Well I do know of Americans teaching English in the Philippines. But they work in the EFL sector teaching students who come to the Philippines to learn English, mostly Japanese and Koreans, some Russians and Western Europeans.
The students are mostly in their late teens early/mid 20s and stay in residential schools for up to a year. They get a mix of one-to-one classes by Filipino teachers and group classes given by foreigners, native westerners English speakers like Canadian, Brits and Americans, maybe even a few Australians.
I know one of those schools very well and even sent earlier this year one of my Khmer staff there to improve his English. He got about 40 hours a week, 8-10 of which group classes by Western Western teachers. Much cheaper than Australia or the US and critically, no visa issues.
This said the serious schools will only hire qualified, experienced foreign teachers with real credentials and I suppose with professional experience in Asia.

he's going there to find love (sex). He doesn't have a job lined up. He just read he could get work there. There's even a distinct possibility he's saying 'Philippines' and really he'll be in Cambodia!!

It requires a good amount of willpower but I will refrain from commenting this quote about Gavinmac's close relative.lately he manages bars in his hometown in the USA. He's also mentally ill and prone to lying.
Seems pretty likely to me, whether he gets paid is another thing.
[edit: sorry couldn't resist ]

Does your cousin live in Florida?
I refuse to go out with nothing more than a whimper followed by a small farting sound and a shit stain on my bed sheets..
Just thought I'd share that with you.

Philippines would be last destination if making decent money is the objective.
China, Myanmar, Vietnam, Oman, Saudi Arabia (if you're not fussy)

I don't think his objective is to make money. I think it's to pursue a younger Filipina. Any tips on that?
