Hitchhiking in Cambodia.
Hitchhiking in Cambodia.
Hello. Thanks for the ride.
I like to hitchhike. I do it as part of the journey, meet people ,not to save money. The people who stop and pick me up are always kind. I've hiked Thailand 4 years ago. Coconut truck drivers through to VIP Lexus driver picked me up over 3.200 kms. Amazing friendly and offer accommodation.
Their perception is I am broke and in need, witch in incorrect. I buy many drivers a meal if the have time.
My question is ? is it possible to Hitchhike in Cambodia? will they understand a thumb out.
Im going to give it a go.

They'll probably think you're begging for money.
Never seen any hitch hikers in Cambodia, you might be in for a long wait. Or not, as some folk are genuinely nice and curious about westerners.

I was thinking of a cardboard sign with my destinations written in the local lingo, as well as a

lol
yes - give it a go.
They'll probably understand it. Doesn't mean they'll do anything about it. Probably just carry on doing what they are doing.

Seen a fair few over the years, but find it rather distasteful and potentially dangerous (especially if female).
But hey, each to their own.

Give it a go and let us know how it goes.
I’ve never thought about doing it here, past that stage in my life, but I have done it in other developing countries when in my early 20’s and had some interesting experiences as well.

I’ve seen it once, in SIhanoukville, BC (Before Chinese).
They were standing there (30 meters from Charlie Harper’s Bar towards Canadia) for two hours then gave up. They even did the thumbs up thing and had a sign, in English.
They looked like two idiots, with the guy doing the two hands together thing (forgot what it’s called) to cars as they passed.
The two Khmer i was with had no idea what they were doing. I told them and they said why don’t they take the bus!

If you are in a city the way to go is to write your destination on a cardboard.
Have seen people do that here a few times and also the typical barang hitchhiker on the highway, never stopped tho as I was flying by with family.
Why not as Miguelito said give it a go and please give us a feed back.
One advice, try not to look like a beggar, khmer tend to judge on looks.

It's not really a done thing here but I don't see how it would be a problem. I've hitchhiked for thousands of km in Nepal, Zambia and Europe. Mostly because there was no other transport available. In many countries it is a normal way of getting about and you are expected to chip in for gas etc, or even some grass or ass.reg wrote: ↑Sun Nov 17, 2019 11:04 amHello. Thanks for the ride.

Haven't seen it so much lately but used to see barang hitchhiking on the East side of Siem Reap.
Picked up a Russian couple just outside of PP one day and gave them a ride to SR.Just wanted to hear their story. They were traveling around SEA on $7 a day.For both.Sleeping in pagoda's and anywhere they could for free.Had a map that somebody had drawn up on how to sneak through the woods to get into Angkor Wat without paying.Tried to tell them they would have a free place to stay for a while if they got caught.

Shave your head and get a monks robe and you'll have no problem finding free rides.
