Inexpensive elementary school
I'm planning on moving to phnom penh with my American 6 year old daughter. I can't afford these expensive international schools. Any suggestions?
How much do you value your daughter's education? If you can't muster 5k a year for the mid-range schools that will just about do then don't move here.
I'm of the same opinion as 1984 and if my reply is a bit blunt - well so be it..
If you cannot afford to educate your daughter in Cambodia, then don't move to Cambodia.

I refuse to go out with nothing more than a whimper followed by a small farting sound and a shit stain on my bed sheets..
Just thought I'd share that with you.

The state schools here teach for half a day. Cheap schools will take them for the other half of the day, and concentrate on (mainly English)language learning. All the other kids will be Cambodian and very few will speak English well. Even in the international schools most students are Cambodian, but they will generally speak good English and the school will have a broad curriculum. As above, this will cost at least $5,000 a year.

Yes. The typical Cambodian state school student spends less time at school than Greta Thunberg.

I know many here don't like it, but check out Home of English. They teach English through other subjects (history, etc) and have some teachers teaching subjects they are passionate about.
It may have its issues. People may have issues with management/owners. But, the school children speak nothing but English in the school grounds (apart from the odd rule breaker). This means their English is very understandable and your native English children would not feel completely out of their depth.
Home of English is not akin to the true International schools, but it is affordable, teachers care (like anywhere, there are exceptions) - or they used to until things changed, and it's a happy middle ground option.

I'd agree with you there, LL. Especially if those books are copied as per the norm in Cambodia. I'm not saying they are, just that it is normal that it happens. Could copy quite a few for 2 grand.
oh - edit. it's for original books. Can't gripe at the cost of original books and doing the right thing re. copyrighting. Books can be $40-70 a pop - say they need 8 different books ... still can't get to 2 grand.
Looks to me like they are charging 200 a term but if parents object to copied books then the cost will be 2000 for originals.

It's a bs "hidden charge", you could buy a whole shelf of books in Monument for less than that.

The curriculum at 11-12th grade, at public schools here, is the same as in the rest of the world. Someone told me, about 5% pass the final exam, and then go on to further opportunity.
