Why are the tourist visas $20 at the airport and nearly twice that at the Had Lek/Koh Kong border? How do they get away with that? And they don't take dollars, Baht only. I guess it would do no good to complain at the immigration office near the airport. Probably get charged for talking to them.

Tourist visas are not 1200 baht at any crossing.
The correct price is $20.
You have been ripped off.

As Murray.

Do not give in to these ridiculous demands. Stand your ground, be firm.

The place to complain to is CATA (Cambodian Association of Travel Agents) or the ministry of tourism.

Please do complain in writing. I'll send you email addresses if you need them.

Poipet has been more or less cleaned up, now it's Koh Kong's turn.

The visa price is 1200 baht because the immigration cops are corrupt, have the power to turn you back to Thailand if they want and nobody has the power to stop them. Those cops paid a lot of money to have that job and be in a position to rip off tourists. They've been doing it for years. Everybody knows about it right from the Boss, down through the immigration authorities, ministries and even CATA. The Boss says that it is a difficult problem for him to solve because "there are many organizations involved." It will be cleaned up someday, but not today. As others suggested, you can try standing your ground. That can work, but not always.

People say you should never lose your temper when dealing with Asians.
That is Bullshit!
When you have people like these pricks on the border attempting to rip you off, go ahead and tell them what you really think. Pull out your camera and tell them you need their name and photo as you are going straight to the Ministry of Tourism when you get to Phnom Penh.
It's always worked for me.

I haven't heard any complaints about overcharging for the visa in the last two months and I've been told the transport association has had it's wings clipped.
People have been coming from Poipet with taxis from the roundabout again. They weren't made to go to the bus station nor to the transport association station (that I haven't seen).

I must admit that tour operator vans still have to pay 2USD/pax if they pick them up at the roundabout.

7:40pm at Had Lek after being turned away by border guards is not a pleasant prospect. They refused to take USD and when I told them the price was $20 they said it was not. I thought about complaining but they could refuse me entry that night and any other times they wanted. They could have arrested me on fake charges. I had no choice, but I will try to file a complain. But would that be dangerous?

They tried the same thing on me 3 years ago, you had little choice. Luckily I was with 3 guys who were on holiday and paid the extra baht and the guy in charge let me off with the correct $20 charge as he could see the other Cambodian visas in my passport at $20. They were cunts however. I thought they had stopped that shit, but I avoid that border as much as I can.

As for Poipet, I was there on Friday, they tried to charge to backpackers in front of me an extra 200 baht each "processing fee". They were not having it though. Poipet is "better". Relatively.

From my experiences, ALL immigration officails are cunts, not just the ones in Cambodia. Too much power, very little oversight, low salaries,buddy- buddy supervision and a little megalomania

do they stamp that the visa was 1,200 baht?
or still stamp $20

Last time i used Koh Kong in May they asked for 1,000 baht and just gave them $20 and stood there till they took it
