Last Home Guest House - warning

I just had a very frightening experience in Phnom Penh and want to share it with others. Whilst staying at the Last Home Guest House during the water festival, my room was broken into whilst I was asleep in it. I had about $1,000 worth of goods stolen (laptop, phone, cash).

When I awoke the next morning and told the owner, she refused to do ANYTHING to help me - even telling me the police were too busy to come and make a report. Infact, she and her son accused me of contriving the story to get insurance (which I unfortunately don't have).

Anyway, the most frightening thing for me was the fact that someone was in my room while I was asleep. Very dangerous for any female travellers - so be warned, this place is not in any way secure (there wasn't, as far as I could see, a security guard on the premises).

Sounds like a truly awful experience and I hope you don't mind me asking a few questions.

1) Did you have an inside bolt? If so did you us it?

2) If you didn't have an inside bolt then how do you think they got in?

3) May you have left the door unlocked?

4) What time did you go to bed and what time did you wake up?

5) Did you wake up when they entered or have any knowledge of them entering?

6) Did the GH have a safe or other secure facility for valuables?

7) Do you suspect this to be an 'inside job' on the part of management?

8) Were there any African guests staying at the GH at that time?

Similar thing happened to me a couple of years ago- albiet at a seedy guesthouse in BKK - a mirrored building opposite the old Toms Irish Bar on 51.
Terry(RIP) used to stay a couple of doors down from me actually, till he got evicted for failing to pay....

It was always infested with young khmers on yamma benders with their mates.
Upwards of 5 of them to a room, squealing and giggling at all hours with loud porn on the TV.

Sometimes they had young "ladies" in the room, sometimes not....
Makes you wonder what they got up to- all jumped up on meth and horny

Anyway..one morning i woke up to find my wallet and cellphone which i had on the nightstand gone.
Actually told the staff and to my enormous surprise a whole bunch of cops turned up and I gave my story. No result ofcourse.

No complaint from me about this -I was careless and knew I was staying in a dodgy place.Could have happened anywhere.

Just thank fuck that I didnt wake up as it could have gotten ugly for me.
Look what happened to Dave from the Ginger Monkey.

Stay safe.

They went through all your belongings to get at the electronics goodies without you waking up?

To answer a few of the questions:

-There was no inside bolt for the room, just a bog standard push button door handle.

-There was a window which connected the corridor with the room which did not have any metal cages or bars covering it. I think this is how entry was gained as I discovered in the morning that the window did not lock. This window also let in enough light from the corridor to be able to see pretty well in the room without turning on the light or using a flash light.

-I went to bed at exactly 10.40pm - I know this because I was watching a movie on my laptop before I slept (and that's why the laptop was next to the bed). I woke up at 05.00am to look at the time - my phone wasn't where I had left it so I switched on the light. That's when I started freaking the fuck out because I couldn't find anything. I had absolutely no knowledge until that time that anyone had been in the room.

-The door was definitely locked.

-There weren't any Africans staying at the Guest House.

-During the morning when I was trying to explore possibilities of who could have done it with the owner and tried to establish which of her staff had been responsible for watching the building (and therefore bore some responsibility for the theft) she kept saying that she trusted her staff implicitly and that I shouldn't dare accuse any of them (all the while happily accusing me of making up the story). Was it an inside job? I wouldn't make that accusation, but I do feel that the owner knew more than she was telling me.

-It was truly one of the most frightening experiences that I have ever had - I do wonder what would have happened if I had woken up?

Yup, it does sound like they got in through the unlocked internal window. Your post does have the ring of truth about it and I do believe you.

My hunch is that that the perp was was some thieving little Khmer monkey either employed by or family of the owners.

Unfortunately, this board is mainly read by expats, semi expats, frequent flyers and other people who would be unlikely to stay at the Last Home so my advice to you would be to put a warning up on the Thorn Tree and Trip Advisor so all the backpackers can read it.

You could start here.......

I would say more likely another guest or a thief unrelated to the owners. It is unlikely the owners of a business would tarnish their reputation for a quick gain. Umm, actually....

This post is doing the rounds on a number of sites.

In all cases they are by a first time poster.

How come you never investigated all these site you are posting on before you took your holiday.??

But now that you have something negative to say - you join up and make your first post a negative one ???

There aren't many people on this site who'd book into a $5 guesthouse. And if they did, it'd only be for an hour and they certainly wouldn't be sleeping.
