The victim has been named as John Edward Thompson and Koh Santepheap have put the story onto their online version here.

I warn you now, the photo accompanying the piece is a particularly graphic and distressing shot of the deceased at the crime scene. So be advised before you click on the above link.

The Sydney Morning Herald also ran this story via the AFP news service, but it doesn't add any information to what we already know.
Australian man murdered in Cambodia

An Australian man has been murdered in a popular Cambodian seaside resort, police say.

Officers identified the victim as John Edward Thompson, 47, who was killed early on Monday morning in the southern town of Sihanoukville, according to the local deputy police chief Kao Ratana.

"It is a case of murder. We are investigating the killing and we have not yet concluded what the motive was," he said by telephone on Tuesday.

Kao Ratana declined to say how the man was killed, but local reports said he was clubbed to death with wooden sticks in a robbery.

A spokesman for the Australian embassy in Phnom Penh said they had been informed of the death by police.

imho, its only real life and makes a news story more real and stops you from skipping over the story as you do with so much crime and tragedy in the media.
Condolences to his family.

According to today's CD, the victim was an expat down on his luck, who'd finished up homeless, broke and staying at a local pagoda.

He occasionally would live with her and a Cambodia man named Chup Vannoen

Oh,that would be her boyfriend...ahhhhhhhhhhhh "brother"

What a sad story.

Snooky does seem to have a quite high mortality rate for expats,self-inflicted or not.
Anyone from there want to shed some light on this unfortunate case?

Man arrested for Aussie's Cambodia death
Cambodian police say they have arrested a construction worker for the killing of an Australian man at a popular seaside resort late last year.

John Edward Thompson, 47, was clubbed to death with wooden sticks in a robbery late December in the southern town of Sihanoukville.

Kol Phally, a local deputy police chief, told AFP by telephone on Wednesday that the 20-year-old was arrested earlier this week, and was believed to be one of three construction workers who committed the crime.

"He confessed to police that he killed the Australian man during a robbery attempt," Kol Phally said, adding that police were hunting for the two other suspects.

Belief in the Cambodia Daily ? My nut sack.

What a deliteful treat. Its seems there are some who worshop the Cambodian Daily.

Previously, many cases like this were treated as overdoses of knuckle-headed barang out of control who were outside of their own countries.

Easy job. The brillaint corrupt police fall in line ... Oh, its self-inflicted !

Was in Sville for couple days, the place didnt have a lot to offer other than its beaches. The streets were deserted at night times other teenage thugs speeding in groups on their mororbikes.

The murder sounds utterly brutal. I have traveld extensively in SEA, but for some unconscious reason I was vigilant while traveling in Cambodia, even that I came close to shit in my pants once or twice.

More reports of the expat dying - the usual.

Alone - bad sights, bad smells.

Young, 50-ish. Seems many come here to die - and they are successful....
