No visa needed for Ha Tien in Vietnam

This might be of interest to people living in Cambodia near the Ha Tien border crossing (Prek Chak/Xa Xia). From very recently, and without any official publicity that I'm aware of,you can enter Vietnam here with a Cambodian or any foreign passport, and visit the "Special Economic Zone" without the need for a visa for Vietnam. However, you are ONLY allowed to come to Ha Tien town, not go to Phu Quoc Island or even cross the Dong Ho bridge. When I first heard of it,I assumed it was an unofficial revenue gathering initiative, but there is no charge(except the 1USD "health certificate" and the entry stamp is different from the normal one,in that it specifies the "Special economic zone".So it's obviously official,I gather the aim is to encourage business people to come and check out the place and maybe set up a business here, but people with 30 day tourist visas for Cambodia can utilise it as well.Don't think that you can bypass the visa system and travel around Vietnam,it's explained to you at the border that you can't do this, and you must exit at the same border. There's an excellent market here in Ha Tien, things are far cheaper than Cambodia, and if you have the papers for a vehicle you can bring it to Ha Tien. There are six casinos as well!!And no,I don't work for the Ha Tien Tourist Board (I don't even think there is one)

There are casinos in Ha Tien? Good to know.

You also said tourists on the 30 day visa in Cambodia can visit Ha Tien SEZ without losing the days left on their Cambo visa?

Thanks for the interesting information.

Are you sure that there are six casinos? Presumably they aren't open to vietnamese nationals.

Do you know what the maximum stay in Ha Tien 'Special Economic Zone' is without a visa?

Sorry for the delay in replying.I didn't mean to suggest that you can go out of Cambodia and re-enter,when you leave there, you lose the visa and need a new one to re-enter.That's if you are stamped in to Vietnam. It's possible if you only go to the casino(s) you can re-enter using the same visa,I will count the casinos later today, but there certainly are a lot,as far as I know, because they are in a sort of no mans land between the two border posts, both Vietnamese and Khmer nationals can visit them,I'll try and confirm that as well.

AFAIK Viet nationals are certainly not allowed to use casinos inside Vietnam, but if they are situated in some kind of 'no man's land' then that would be different. The casinos would of course then not be in Vietnam.

Googling vietnam casinos I noticed that there is now one near Lao Cai. Maybe there has been some loosening-up of gambling legislation?

The only problem with that is you would then be in Vietnam.

I counted the casinos yesterday, when we came back through the border. There is a huge new one called the Ha Tien Vegas, and at least four others, but some of them are some distance off the road, and it's hard to see exactly how many there are.I asked at the border and was told both Khmer and Vietnamese can use them.I think technically they are in Cambodia, but you have to pass the border post there to get to them. You can stay in the "Special Economic Zone" for up to 15 days with no visa. Some friends who arrived yesterday said they were hassled for a small fee by the Vietnamese border guards, and ended up giving them 3 USD to get them off their backs.

Technically they are in Cambodia just like the casinos at poipet or bavet. In Poipet they are passed the stampout for cambodia as well but you can just walk past the guards and come back without any problems.
