Phnom Penh – A man was seriously wounded when armed robbers fired 5 shots at him before making off with his 2013 125cc (Dream) moto. The shooting occurred in front of the Anh Chay Ly Spa* on Street 310, in Boeung Keng Kong 1 Commune of Daunh Penh District, at 11:30 pm of the 25th of December, 2012.
The victim has been identified as a 32 year old male named Chen Sotea, from Chuk Angrae Leu Commune in Mean Chay District. The victim had arrived on his new moto at the Anh Chay Ly Spa, where his wife was working, in order to take her out for a light evening meal during her break.
On returning her to her place of work, as she was getting off her husband’s moto in front of the Anh Chay Ly Spa, two men in street clothes and motorcycle helmets suddenly appeared from behind on a moto. One of them pulled out a handgun and fired 5 shots at the victim. One bullet hit him in the left thigh, and another in the left testicle. The robbers then wrested the victim’s moto away from him and fled the scene.
With his wife supporting her husband, the victim was taken to the neighboring Mekong Clinic, but, as his injuries were beyond the scope of the clinic, doctors and the victim’s family had him transferred to the Khmer-Soviet Friendship Hospital.
Police at the crime scene found 4 bullet casings and 1 intact bullet bearing the mark ម៉ាកកា៥៤ (KA54). According to police, the victim had been shot at 5 times: 2 shots went astray, 2 hit their target, and 1 failed to go off.
A source stated that, after the armed thieves had made their escape, police in the capital broadcast the getaway by 2 way radio in a prioritized effort to coordinate their capture and arrest. Police everywhere barricaded roads, but the criminals appear to have been more than a match for police. As an aside, police arrested 2 gangs of armed robbery suspects just last week, but crime, nevertheless, continues to remain rampant to a worrisome degree.
* Located on the same block as Kombu Coffee which was hit about a month ago. A disproportionate number of armed robberies and purse snatchings have been reported recently by the papers in this commune. One which went unreported, but which was personally witnessed to, occurred about 2 months ago at the all night convenience store on the corner of Street 57 and Street 302, when a new Nex (or Icon) parked there was stolen.
